Sixth Sunday of the Year

Fr. Duncan writes: I have been away in Norfolk last week for my Christmas holiday. It was a great week with plenty of opportunity to relax and walk. Each day I went to Walsingham, to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham to celebrate Mass. Before I left on Friday, I lit a candle at the Slipper Chapel for all in our parish.
Wednesday this week is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Season of Lent. Masses on Ash Wednesday are at 10am and 8pm. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at each Mass. Please Note: Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast and Abstinence. During Lent, it is traditional for us to ‘give up’ something we like, as a penance. This we should all try to do. Fasting is an important way to keep Lent. But I would also like to encourage you to be positive and take on something extra during Lent as well. This year, I want to encourage you to use the ‘Living as One’ Daily Meditation Books as part of your Lenten prayer. If you are unable to come to Mass each day, you could make this reading and reflection part of your daily prayer during Lent. This is part of our spiritual preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we are also encouraged to take on an extra spiritual exercise or devotion, for example coming to weekday Mass, maybe some spiritual reading or walking the Stations of the Cross. Here in our parish during Lent we will be having Stations of the Cross each Friday at 7.30pm followed by Mass. Now is the time for us to decide what we will be doing during Lent this year. Then we will be ready to begin on Wednesday.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes
Would you like to come on pilgrimage to Lourdes with us this year? The brochure for this year’s pilgrimage arrived the other day and I have put a copy on the notice board in the porch with the details of the hotels and prices. We shall be joining with the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes in July (25th to 31st). We will have a meeting for those interested on Tuesday 16th February at 7.30pm. In the meantime, please think about the pilgrimage, talk about the pilgrimage and pray about the pilgrimage. For more information, have a word with Fr Duncan.

Lenten Alms
The box for your Lenten Alms donations is near the 2nd Station. Lenten Alms is money we wish to donate to help those less well off than ourselves. Often this money comes from savings we have made by fasting from something, for example sweets, drinks, cigarettes, etc.

Children's Liturgy of the Word Term Dates – 10.00am Mass

Foodbank
We have received a letter from Hillingdon Foodbank expressing their thanks for our donation of 129kg of food over the Christmas period – “We are grateful to everyone who gave or participated in some way. By doing this, you have reached out to someone in need, in Hillingdon, who would otherwise go without food during the festive season." We are hoping to make a further collection for Hillingdon Foodbank during Lent and are looking for volunteers able to make a couple of trips to transport the donated food to Uxbridge during Lent. Please contact Nicola in the parish office if you are available to help between Monday to Friday during the working day.

Take to Heart these Words – Scripture Readings of Lent & Holy Week
