Parish Priest: Fr. Michael Johnston
Parish Administrator: Nicola Burke
Fr. Michael writes: The Ascension of Jesus is the climax of his victory over sin and death. The resurrection, the ascension, and the giving of the spirit are part of the same event. In one action that goes beyond earthly time, Jesus emerges from the tomb, returns to the Father, and gives the Spirit. However from the point of view of the disciples, they found the tomb empty on Sunday morning, the risen Lord appeared to them, and then returned to the Father and sent them his Spirit. The Ascension of Jesus is his liberation from all restrictions of time and space. It does not represent his removal from the world, but his constant presence everywhere. Now he is united to the Father, he is present whenever God is present and that is everywhere.
Comboni Missionaries Appeal
This weekend we have an appeal and retiring collection for the Comboni Missionaries. These are an international group of men and women committed to Mission and to witnessing to the Gospel amongst those disadvantaged by injustice, poverty and discrimination. They number around 4,000 priests; sisters and brothers who work in 46 countries. They take their name from Daniel Comboni who was born at Limone, on Lake Garda in 1831 and died in Khartoum, Sudan in 1881. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2003. We welcome Fr. Franco Mastromauro. Please be generous this weekend to the Missions.

Parish Kitchen
Last week I was in our parish kitchen and noticed that the worktops are filled with children’s toys; cups; food; several types of juices; candles etc. The worktops should be kept clear when people have finished using the kitchen. All of the rooms – Hesdin Hall, Warrender Room, Coffee Lounge and toilets should be left clean and tidy. We employ a paid cleaner but she cannot clear and tidy unless all the groups co-operate.

Flowers in May
This month of May is by tradition the month in the Church dedicated to Mary. In our Church we have a lovely side chapel and statue of Mary. I would encourage those with gardens and flowers to bring flowers in for our side chapel to Mary during the month of May. Our floral ladies group will keep an eye to make sure they are kept fresh. Some people may prefer to buy some flowers rather than take them from their gardens, but either way it would be lovely if during May our side chapel was decorated with flowers.
Flowers in June
June is by tradition in the Church the month of the Sacred Heart. During May many people have been most generous in bringing in flowers for the altar and statue of Our Lady. I think it would be very nice to do the same for the Sacred Heart, so that the altar will be full of flowers in thanksgiving to the Sacred Heart for so many blessings. Our floral ladies will be happy to place them in vases.
Car-Park Barrier
As you may have noticed new barriers have recently been erected so that we can reclaim our car-park from the commuters; the local offices and shops etc. After just over a week and a bill of over £2000, someone who does not like us wrenched the entrance barrier to such an extent that it has been broken beyond repair. This took place sometime between midnight and 7.00am. The matter has been reported to the police who will endeavour to keep a special eye on the place but should anyone passing by ever witness suspicious behaviour or vandalism in our church grounds, the police have encouraged that you promptly telephone them. Meanwhile not submitting to this kind of hooliganism, I have ordered a new barrier.
Altar Servers
Volunteers are still needed for the Confirmation Mass on Sat 30th May at 11:30am and also for the 70th Anniversary Mass on Fri 12th June at 7.30pm. If you are able to serve for either Mass, please put your name on the lists in the sacristy
