First Sunday of Lent

Fr. Michael writes:  At Easter we will celebrate the Resurrection, the most important feast in the Christian calendar. Now we have begun Lent as a time to ready ourselves for that great feast, we are invited to let God find us where we are. He has the same question to ask each of us: “Where are you?” During this Lent we can make time to look at where we are in our lives and discover God’s presence anew. We are challenged to make time to listen to His Word. We are invited to let him get close to who we are and how we are. Traditionally Lent is a time when we give up something or take up something extra. I give below suggestions so that these next six weeks help all of us to grow closer to Christ.

Preparation for Lent

  1. Weekday Mass10.00am daily. Why not try to attend Mass each day during Lent?
  2. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament – Takes place in the Church each day from 10.30am-12.00 noon. Why not take the time to pop into Church, even for a few minutes to keep company with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament?
  3. Rosary – Every morning at 9.30am in the Church, the rosary is recited. The rosary is a lovely way to pray and to start the day.
  4. Thursday Night Prayer Group – Every Thursday at 8.00pm in the Warrender Room, open to all who wish to develop their prayer life in a group.
  5. Stations of the Cross – Will take place every Friday of Lent at 7.00pm in the Church.
  6. Confessions – Takes place every Saturday from 10.30am-11.30am and 5.15pm-5.30pm. Reconciliation Service with Bishop John Arnold on Monday 6th April at 7.30pm.
  7. Lenten Fast Day – Takes place on Friday 6th March when we are asked to fast and give our profits to CAFOD’s retiring collection at Masses on Sunday 8th March.

Welcome
To Fr. Thyagu SMA who will be helping us with Sunday Masses at 8.30am and 10.00am.

Sympathy & Prayers
Our sympathy and prayers to the family of John Lee whose Funeral Mass takes place in our Church this Monday 2nd March at 10.00am and also to the family and friends of Gerald Salt whose Funeral Mass takes place this Friday 6th March at 10.00am.

Retiring Collection
This Sunday at all Masses there will be a retiring collection for Lenten Alms. This year’s Lenten Alms collection will go to support the St. John Southworth Fund for the Poor in our Diocese and for the school building project in Bangladesh for Catholic schools. Both are projects which the Cardinal has chosen for Lenten Alms. A Box for Lenten Alms is available under Stations of the Cross II.

Fr. Agustin
This Sunday Fr. Agustin will return to celebrate this evening’s 6.00pm Mass followed by a Reception at which he will be presented with a gift from the Parish. At the back of the Church in the porch are sheets for you to complete if you can bring any items of food. All food should be brought to the Hall by 5.30pm.

RCIA
Please pray for the members of our RCIA who hope to fully join the Church at Easter.

Sunday Group Helpers Required
We need two more helpers for the Sunday Groups. These are for the children who go to non-Catholic schools. It is an important group which takes place during term time from 9.10am to 9.50am. If you can help, please see Fr. Michael as soon as possible.

Please sample our Fair Trade tea and coffee (now regularly served at our parish events) as well as snacks, including chocolate, fruit and biscuits. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers
The 4th Ruislip Windmill Guides are once again collecting Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers, currently being given out in Sainsburys. Last year, with the Parish’s help we managed to get a good deal of games equipment from this scheme. A box is in the Church Porch by the newspapers for any vouchers to be put in, thank you.

CAFOD Lent Fast Day: 6th March 2009
CAFOD Lent Fast Day is this Friday 6th March, please take a Fast Day envelope home with you today and give generously to CAFOD’s Lent Fast Day and bring hope to people living in poverty. Phalla is a 58 year old foster mother who cares for eight children orphaned by AIDS, with support from CAFOD. She asked CAFOD to pass on this message: “I grew up on my own so I know how hard it is to have no family. Orphan children need security and love but many are left in the cold, out on the streets. Please help children who have nobody else to rely on”. You can read more about Phalla’s family in the CAFOD Fast Day leaflet. Envelopes are available in the Church this week and next. Don’t forget to fill in your gift aid details if you are a taxpayer. Thanks for your support.

Lenten Booklets
These are available in the porch – ‘Lord, Giver of Life’, cost £1.00 each. Please put money in newspaper slot at back of church.
