Fr. Agustin writes: On This Sunday, the Gospel continues the theme of the Christmas season and the manifestation of Christ as the visible face of the invisible God. Today, we hear John the Baptist pointing out Christ as the Lamb of God; another Epiphany, a revelation by John of the true identity of Jesus and the nature of his mission; he is sent by the Father to take away the sins of the world. The title of Lamb of God given by John points to the sacrificial aspect of Jesus’ mission. This was prefigured by the Passover
lambs of the Exodus, whose blood was a mark of divine protection for Israel and whose flesh was eaten in a liturgical meal. The Prophet Isaiah foresees the suffering Messiah as an innocent lamb slain for the sins of others. Hatred, not forgiving, sin is the most destructive thing in the human race, it isolates us from God and human relationships, it destroys families, marriages, communities and nations. That is why the son of God had to come, the Lamb of God, to destroy sin and to give us his peace.
